Early History Of BelCoRTA

Mrs. Prudence King, a teacher from Martin Ferry, Ohio, organized the first chapter of Retired
Teachers in Belmont County, and was the first president, serving capably for two years. She also
became District IX Director from this area and served nine years. Mrs. King was also Legislative
Chairman of this District at the time of her death.

There were sixty-five charter members in 1965. District IX Directors from Belmont County include Prudence King, Dale Bethel, and Betty Rehm.

Under Betty Rehm's presidency a memorial service was instituted for members deceased
within the past year. A book was placed in the local library of the deceased members’
hometown. Today $15 is placed in the scholarship fund in memory of the deceased member.
